The parametric modelling process not only improved the efficiency of workflow, but also helped to make the most informed design decisions within a very compressed project period; ensuring DDP’s success throughout life-span. In construction, the benefits of using the parametric modelling techniques are apparent. The digital design model could be refined at any time throughout the design and construction to accommodate additional onsite conditions, local regulations, engineering requirements and cost controls. In the bustling streets of Seoul, the Dongdaemun Design Plaza by Zaha Hadid Architects has become a landmark for its atypical architecture.

The park also includes the water gateway built in the Joseon dynasty called Yigansumun. From the very beginning, DDP garnered attention as Korea’s first public building whose design was chosen through an international design contest held by the Seoul Metropolitan Government. The winning design was by world-renowned Zaha Hadid, an Iraqi-born British architect.

Gwangyang Flower Blossom Tour from Seoul / Busan
Zaha Hadid is a British Iraqi architect and winner of the 2004 Pritzker Prize. When I first arrived to Korea, there was a stadium where the culture complex now sits. The DDP was built to replace the stadium which was built in the 1920s under Japanese rule. Designboom has received this project from our DIY submissions feature, where we welcome our readers to submit their own work for publication. On the first floor’s waiting area, Korean studio xsxl integrates a large arch entrance and a promotional space with a vast planetary chandelier hanging over the high ceiling.

Often the home of artistic exhibitions, like TeamLab, but also home to Seoul’s fashion week, there is always something to see… if the building itself isn’t enough. Dongdaemun History & Culture Park (동대문역사문화공원) have traditional and modern cultural facilities that come all at once with harmony and this was also the newest park in Seoul. During the Joseon dynasty, it was used as a military training ground and the major historical remains can be found still in the place including the original section of the Seoul City Walls.

The exterior envelope of the DDP, a smooth and giant mushroom-like structure floating above ground level, is made of concrete, aluminum, steel, and stone. The interior of the building is finished with plaster reinforced with synthetic fiber, acoustic tiles, acrylic resin, stainless steel, and polished stone in the interior. SeouLight is a large scale light show that uses the 220 meter facade of the DDP as the canvas. The media façade festival is an annual event so if you’re here for it, definitely go see it! The show can be seen from all over but you’ll want to get up close so you can also have the music surround you as you’re enveloped by the lights. This year it was on display once in the spring and again in the winter.
Using Public Transit
This landmark is the major area of South Korea’s fashion hub and is a very famous tourist destination. It includes a walk-able park over the roads, huge global exhibition space, small retail stores, and some restored parts of the Seoul Fortress. The Dongdaemun Design Plaza (동대문디자인플라자), often referred to as DDP by locals, is one of those cool things to see in Seoul that is on numerous list after list of the architectural must-see’s in the capital city of Korea. Seoul was even named the World Design Capital in 2010 because of the DDP. The building is iconic and is actually the world’s largest atypical architecture.
A diverse digital database that acts as a valuable guide in gaining insight and information about a product directly from the manufacturer, and serves as a rich reference point in developing a project or scheme. Whenever I visit DDP, I always saw a lot of fashion models and tourist who loves photo shooting here. Aside from the shopping malls, SM Town Store and Kakao Friends are the most visited shop with Kpop and cute merchandise in DDP. Other courses are Hangang/Jamsil Course and the Night view course cost 15,000 to 18,000 won for adults and 9,000 to 12,000 for children. This place is also composed of different halls such as the Art Museum and Design Lab which holds different kinds of art and cultural exhibits. Last 2017, I got the chance to see Pixar’s Exhibit where I saw life-size figures like Lightyear BUZZ and Woody of Toy Story, and the cute monsters from Monster University.
Three exhibition halls and two convention halls make up part of the inner sanctum while a design museum, lab and children’s education center, media center, and a Sky Lounge allow the DDP to host a variety of exhibitions and events. A Design Cultural Park composed of an event hall, sports memorial area, relic museum and design gallery helps finish out the interior space. The DDP Park is a place for leisure, relaxation and refuge – a new green oasis within the busy urban surroundings of Dongdaemun. The design integrates the park and plaza seamlessly as one, blurring the boundary between architecture and nature in a continuous, fluid landscape. Voids in the park’s surface give visitors glimpses into the innovative world of design below, making the DDP an important link between the city’s contemporary culture, emerging nature and history.
The greenspace, encased by the plaza, is integrated seamlessly into the site and designed to rethink the traditional Korean garden concept. Described by the designers as "a field of pixilation and perforation patterns", the backlit facade is speckled with minute perforations that allow the building to transform from a solid entity by day into an animated light show by night. It has staged diverse cultural events including exhibitions, fashion shows, product launch shows, forums and conferences. Referred to as the DDP in Seoul by locals, this spaceship in the middle of the city is a must-see for any architecture buffs, artists, and designers looking to be wowed by something truly amazing. The Gyeongseong Sports Complex, constructed in 1925, underwent significant demolition of the adjacent wall and buildings, resulting in its renaming to Dongdaemun Stadium. Following Korea's independence, the first modern stadium was rebranded as the Seoul Sports Complex, becoming a notable venue for national events.
